In Libya, a major flood disaster occurred on September 11, 2023, due to the 'Daniel storm' that hit the Central Mediterranean. The storm struck the eastern coast of the country, causing heavy rainfall in Benghazi, Bayda, Marj, Susah, and Derna cities. The floodwaters swept away buildings, roads, infrastructure, and vehicles. Many villages were completely destroyed.

Interior Minister Isam Abu Zeribe announced that the death toll in Derna city alone exceeded 1,500, with more than 7,000 people missing.
