Payment of Zakat is one of the major pillars of Islam, which is compulsory for Muslims only if they have financial means. Muslim Believers are obligated to perform the practises that Allah (SWT) requires from us within the conditions that He has stipulated. We have been taught the practice of worship through the Qur'an and the implementations of the Prophets that Allah (SWT) has sent from amongst his servants.
According to Surah Al Tawba, Verse 60., there are 8 categories of people who may receive Zakat funds. The categories are mentioned in the verse as follows: “Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and the needy and for those employed to collect [Zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveller – an obligation [imposed] by Allah. Allah is Knowing and Wise. ”
“Take from their wealth a charity, purifying them and cause them to increase by it, and bless [upon] them. Indeed, your blessings (are a) reassurance for them. And Allah (is) AllHearer, All-Knower.” (Surah at-Tawbah, 9:103) “Purify your wealth by giving Zakat.” (Hadith Prophet Muhammed SAW) Through Zakat and Fitr Campaign, we assist believing Muslims full their financial obligation and facilitate the distribution of Zakat charity among the eight groups of people, as commanded in Surah Tawbah, Verse 60.
